An application must be made at Alabama Power Company, 915 Queen City Avenue. Along with the application, a deposit must be paid. The water department for Tuscaloosa is located in City Hall, 2201 University Blvd. The water department for Northport is located in Northport City Hall, 3500 Highway 82 By-Pass. Alabama Gas Corporation is located at 1824 University Boulevard. A minimum deposit is required for all new customers. This deposit is determined by one of two ways (using the lesser amount as the deposit): 1) $100.00 or 2) an estimated 2 months billing from the two highest previous 12 billings. Comcast Cable TV is located at 700 Parkview Center. In order to have service installed, simply call and set up an appointment. You must be home when they install the service. At that time, an installation fee and the first month's bill must be paid. The first month's bill may vary depending on how many additional outlets and pay channels you have installed. To acquire telephone service, contact Bell South. Simply call and make arrangements. If you are calling from out of town, call collect. The installation fee is determined by amount of service requested and amount of wiring, etc. that has to be done. This fee can be billed along with the first month's service bill. Connection charges may also be divided into installments to be billed along with your monthly telephone bill. A minimum deposit of approximately $75.00 may be required in advance before your telephone may be connected. If you have a previous satisfactory credit record with South Central Bell, the deposit may be waived. If previous service is in good standing, there will be only a $40 connection fee and no deposit. We strongly suggest that you give serious consideration to purchasing a policy to cover the contents, any jewelry, computer equipment, or other items of value. You may purchase from any agency; however, Sealy Insurance Agency has an excellent Renter's Insurance Policy that is available for any apartment dweller (even Students). For students of the University of Alabama, there is an organization called Off-Campus Association available to help students cover the utility deposits required to have services connected. Off-Campus Association (OCA) is located at 1004 7th Avenue, Tuscaloosa, Al. Telephone (205) 752-7663. A membership of $30.00 will allow OCA to cover the deposits for Alabama Power Company and Alabama Gas Company. For an additional $10.00, the deposit for Tuscaloosa Water can be waived. A $15 fee covers the $75 Northport water deposit, and a check for $35.00 must be left payable to Northport Water for a turn on fee. A $35 fee covers the $75 deposit with Bell South, but check with Bell South first to see if you are approved to have your deposit waived. The membership must be renewed each year from August to September for a renewal fee of $10.00. OCA hours of operation are 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. top
You may register to vote at the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse located at 714 Greensboro Avenue, in downtown Tuscaloosa. The registrar's office is located in Room 100 and is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed 12-1 for lunch). You will need to bring proof of your birth date, your social security number, and your local address. Your Alabama or out-of-state driver's license will do for all except the social security number, and a paid utility bill, lease or such with your current address on it will verify your local address. Go in the main door of the Courthouse, turn left and go to the last door on the left. top
Determine which school district you live in by calling the City Superintendent of Education office at (205) 759-3700 if you live in the city limits; or the County Superintendent of Education office at (205) 758-0411 if you live outside the City of Tuscaloosa. You should then contact the principal of the proper school for enrollment instructions. Shelton State Community College or The University of Alabama Continuing Education Center offers excellent adult programs. top
For all persons desiring to establish residency in the state, an Alabama driver's license and automobile license must be procured within 30 days after entering the state. A visitor is not required to purchase a driver's permit or auto license locally. Driving permits and automobile licenses may be purchased at the Courthouse on Greensboro Avenue. top
Most standard auto policies cover anywhere in the Continental U.S. Particular attention should be paid to limits of liability as required by the Alabama Financial Responsibility Law - limits required are $10/$20/$5,000. Contact your Chamber of Commerce for a listing of local insurance agents who will gladly furnish you with any additional information you might desire. Your policy on your personal property, as a rule, is invalid and must be rewritten. Call an agent of your insurance company and have a new policy written, or obtain verification from the agent issuing your policy that it does provide coverage in this state. The "Doctors' Exchange", telephone (205) 349-2706, can reach a physician for you in any emergency, day or night. There is an excellent emergency room facility open round the clock at DCH Regional Medical Center. As soon as possible, you should select a family physician to whom you can turn for care and advice. In Northport, there is DCH Northport. Telephone: (205) 333-4500. For students, there is the University's Health Center on campus. top
Go to any of the leading stores in the city and apply for a charge account. The merchants will cooperate with the Credit Bureau to establish a credit rating for you. Your landlord or mortgage company is an excellent credit reference. top
The Harry Pritchett Municipal Golf Course (University Golf Course) is located at the eastern end of 15th Street. Anyone may play by paying a fee. Carts, instruction and equipment for purchase or rent is available, and the driving range is open daily. Indian Hills Country Club, Woodland Forest Country Club are private courses, although many allow prospective members to play the course. Mimosa Country Club, telephone (205) 752-8112, will sometimes allow non-members to play with a green fee. All have good 18 hole courses. top
There are lighted courts located on The University of Alabama Campus adjacent to the Memorial Coliseum, and at the J. Oviatt Bowers Park complex off Jug Factory Road. Unlighted courts are available at other locations. Call the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority at (205) 553-3671 for more information. Most of the private Country Clubs listed previously have excellent tennis facilities. top

Lake Tuscaloosa, Lake Lurleen, the Holt Reservoir and other public lakes provide good fishing. top
Lake Lurleen has an excellent developed camping, picnic and swimming area. Lake Lurleen is located off U.S. 82 West about ten miles from Northport. There are several city parks including J. Oviatt Bowers, Eastwood park, Snow Hinton, River Road Park, and Monnish Park with good picnic facilities. Contact the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority. top
During the business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., you may call your particular apartment office or the Sealy Main Office, telephone (205) 391-6000. After 5:00 p.m., call the answering service at (205) 345-8006. Give them your name, address (including street address and apartment number), phone number, and briefly explain problem as specifically as possible. The answering service will relay your message to the maintenance department person who is on-call or the security guard on duty as necessary. Please make a note of the numbers you may need and put them someplace easy to find, i.e. by your phone, on the refrigerator, etc. top
